We just returned to Hampton from Venice last week. We enjoyed the Beach and we worked hard to do maintainence on our home in South Venice. It is rented out Jan.Feb.and March. Since having lived there in my teen years and going to high School at the old Venice Nokomis High School when it was in Nokomis I have seen many changes. They have all been for the better. We now have board walks at the beaches to protect the Sea Oats and keep erosion from taking everything. We have many shops and businesses that have made it possible to stay in town and not have to go to Sarasota. The By pass and the inland have given us more options for water sports and an easy way to by pass the down town area. We are also near to the nations cities through the interstate I 75. Yes it is true that we have more people than we did years ago. But they all know a good thing when they see it. You can still buy a new house cheaper here in Venice and Nokomis than in most parts of the USA. God has been good to us all. Continue to pray for our nation that we may remain safe. Keep your eyes on the Son , Sincerely, Gary T. Koch Sr.

Venice Florida is the best little town there is!!! It still had much more character than many other places....BUT! It was much better 15 years ago. It was more of a small town, now there are too many tourists...and WHOEVER thought of putting that stupid Anita's sandbar right in the center of the once-beautiful south jetty are huge MORONS and shouuld tear it down. It takes away all the beauty of the South Jetty and turned it into yet another tourist trap. Please stop trying to make our beautiful town into a tourist attraction!

I lived in Venice almost all my life, and have always loved it there. My mother still lives there and my in-laws who are French have a place in the Plantation. My family and I go back about once a month and it is great for me to see my children play on the same beach I played on as a child. I graduated in 1982 and was wondering if there is going to be a reunion? If anyone could email me with information I would greatly appreciate it.

I lived in Venice for 27 yrs. I have to admit I did like it. My maiden name was Williams, I have since moved to NJ and have 2 children. I have a 3yr. old and a 6 month old. I miss my family the most. I also miss a couple of other people. I would never live there again. I do go to fla, from time to time.I miss going to Sharkey's for frozen drinks. My life is so much better now than it ever was living in Venice.

My married son just left our home in South Venice. He had a wonderful time. He loved Myaka State park where with all of the rain the alligators were close to the road. He fished the inland behind Alberston's grocrey and caught a lot of snook and sheep head. His children biked the steets of South Venice and the family had a great time. He is back in Parsons Kansas by now and enjoying his baby farm outside of town that he and His lovely wife just purchased. Well Keep the Venice roads safe and the beaches clean. We hope to come down soon. Sincerely Gary. Remember keep your eyes on the Son.

Venice is one of the only places in the USA that has gotten better with the years. As a young teen ager living in the Venice area it was hard to ever see an alligator. Now they are in abundance if you look in the right spots. The beaches are more accessible and cleaner than in the 1950s. Thanks to all of you who make the Venice area so great. Sincerely keep your eyes on the Son Gary.

As an 15 year old teen ager living in Venice in 1954 there were more things to do summer and winter than you people that live in the north can dream of. I had 8l.00 I had worked hard for putting up hay and caring for the farm in Ohio. We had recently moved to Venice for a year of relaxtion for my father from the farm and the family business. We were driving past a home on Alahambra drive just off Harbor Drive in downtown Venice and in the empty lot next to a house was a beautiful hydraplane (boat) for sale. The owner of the boat said he would take 80.00 for it. His name was Phillip Hider. He said that he would take 80.00 for it. He wanted to sell it and get a small sailboat. Well that boat coupled with a new 10 horsepower Scott Atwater motor with "bail omatic" became my mode of travel up and down the inland water way. Phillip became my best friend in Venice and my school pal. I remember putting some of my buddies on the front of the hydrplane and giving them the thrill of their lives. Lloyd White would lay down on the front of this 8 foot boat and his head would hang over the front. We put a pillow under his chin and his legs wrapped around the cockpit where I was perched. We whizzed by most of the other vessels going our way. When a big boat came toward us we easily jumped their wakes. Often we were about 2/3s out of the water and in the air. But to 15 years olds it was great to fly. When we got to Sarasota and in the bay the swells were rather hard to get over and somestimes the whole nose of the little boat would go under them. Well Lloyd did'nt go for that to well since he had to come up for air from the nose of the boat. He said , " Gary if I ever get off this boat I will never go out on a boat with you as long as I live." He actually said a whole lot more than that but the salty words that he used cannot be used here in presence of mixed company. Well on the way home down the waterway we got into a terrible thunderstorm. The rain pelted our faces like bullets and I could barely keep my eyes open. As a fearless 15 year old I held the throtle wide open and contined to head south to Venice. The rain let up before we got to the Donna Bay. My dad did'nt know that we had gone to Venice and he was not a happy camper. However Mom and Dad were willing to let me come back home and I guess they were just thankful that I hadn't drowned. Lloyd never did go out on the boat with me anymore and I continued to take other pals out on it. I miss those days but still enjoy the inland and the bays. Keep you eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary.

Reading the last person's comment on Venice reminds me that we all see things from a different perspective. It was in 1969 and my daughter was about 3 years old. We had gone to Venice for vacation and we were staying in my parents home which was vacant in the summer. My wife had become very ill with a fever and I was in charge of taking care of her and our three children. My daughter was the youngest. She was about 3 years old. She was small for her age and could walk under most tables. It was neat to see her walking and she was talking very plainly. One morning I began to fix breakfast for the family and try to make everyone feel good by saying, " Who wants pan cakes ?" And this little voice out of no where says loudly , " I do!!!" We did not expect that little child to respond that way and we all had one of the biggest laughs of the vacation. Well, that little girl is grown now and she is a full time minister working with children and youth. And we are really proud of her. She has a wonderful husband who works right with her in the Church helping children and youth find God and a good moral life. She remembers Florida with wonderful memories and happy times. So I guess it is to a great extent what you experienced there. My memories of Venice are some of the greatest times in my life. Venice is a beautiful, clean and bright city in which to live. Thanks to all of you who live there and make it what I believe to be one of the best places in the world in which to live. Sincerely Gary. Keep your eyes on the Son.

i just wanted to say to all of those people out there who think venice is so spectacular, it's not! i lived there for 13 years of my life. i graduated from venice high school. i also attended m.c.c.! there are way too many old people and the hot weather gets really old! since i've left that dreaded place i've lived in ohio and the carolina's! now, if you want to live in a beautiful place, with young people move to the carolina's! i'm in my late 20's and i remember when i lived there you couldn't do anything without the old people complaining and trying to shut places down because they're too loud! if you're over 70 it's a great place to live. if you're still young, please look elsewhere to live! i couldn't wait to graduate and get out of that town! i'm glad i did, because there's so much life outside of venice, florida!!!!!

My husband went on a business trip to Tampa the first part of this year. He came back in love with Florida. After a few weeks, I decided there was nothing to hold me here in Virginia, so we went to visit Tampa. I hated it. To many people for me, so we drove down the coast. We hit Venice, and I knew that was where I wanted to be. Unfortunately, my daughter is 17 and wanted to stay here to graduate, so my husband went ahead and started his own business here. My heart is still in Venice, and I figure one of these days, that is where I will be. It was the most peaceful, calming place I have ever been in. I hope all that live there really appreciate the beauty and peacefulness. If not, move away for a while and go back. You'll appreciate all it has to offer. One day I'll be back, but for now I'll just keep checking in on the internet.

Well, it's been interesting going back and reading all of the entries by Gary Koch (my dad) and my two brothers. It's cool how reading these entries almost takes one there to Venice. I've gone on vacation to Venice almost every year of my life. So that means that I have lived almost a year there, although not all at one time. Unfortunately though, I will not get to go this year. I appreciate my parents always taking us to Venice for vacation. Vacations in Venice were always relaxing and carefree. Grandmas' house never had a TV, so in the evenings, my parents and my two brothers and I would play board games for hours and hours! RACKO! HIGH BID! A day on vacation usually consisted of getting up, and jumping straight into my swimsuit! Then I'd blow up my beach toys, and squish them into the backseat with me - the trunk was usually full of the ancient beach umbrella (which was held up with a shell), beach blanket, changes of clothes for 5 people, sun tan lotion, and a wide assortment of fishing equipment. The fishing poles were usually hanging out one window or another. We'd spend the day at the beach swimming, shelling, shark's toothing, fishing, sleeping, reading, and playing frisbee in the water. Then off to Duff's smorgasboard for a nice huge meal around 4:00. Then we'd shop a little or relax at the house and back to the Jetty for fishing. Man, I'll never forget the smell of "OFF". I love the feeling after being outside at the beach all day, then getting cleaned up and feeling the sun still on my skin (sunburns were to be expected after 5 hours on the beach!) I will never forget my mom on the beach!!! How can a woman who wears SPF 15, a T-shirt, a hat, under an umbrella, with a towel on her legs still get a sunburn? Oh well, I guess it's just one of those Venice miracles! I have so many wonderful memories of Venice, which I will share for another time, but I just want to say that those memories are very, very, very dear to me. Those days were relaxing for my Daddy, when he could get a little heaven on earth. And I am so happy for him that some day soon he will be able to live in Venice which he has dreamed of for so long. God Bless! Becky (Koch) B.

Hi, we have a villa in Myrtle Trace in the Plantations - we have had homes on the Plantations for the last 18 years - we love it there and my 12 year old daughter looks forward very much to visiting there - was a bit concerned on our last visit to find that some of the Association for our condo had said that no one was allowed to ride on a scooter - as far as I know there are only two children who live on Myrtle Trace who rode scooters and it was lovely to see many people who had retired, coming up to the children saying it had brought back memories of their scooter days as children - Venice and the Plantations is Paradise for us, however such petty rules does rather spoil it and since we only visit in the summer, feel a few children riding controlled up and down the plantation roads cannot harm it or anyone - people are allowed to walk their dogs, ride bikes and scooters seem so harmless - i feel sorry for our neighbour who has a lovely boy of 14 years old, who does lots of jobs for our older residents and it was with great pride he purchased his scooter, having worked all summer long. what do other people thing?

What a geat site to visit. thanks for many memories of my childhood growing up in venice. if anyone want's to e-mail back , i'd be happy to reply. my days in venice were in the late 40's to the mid 50's. i lived in edgewood on myrtle ave. close friends were the konas, skeeter veal, bill wimbish. doug bowen, joe earley wynn . now live in duluth ga. where i own a tackle retal store. wish it was located in venice where roy's sporting goods was the place to go. went to grammer school in laurell and middle school in venice when it was brand new. my job was to get up in the morning and go fishing at the jettys then stop at smittys' and get a cuban sandwich then go to richs' service station for a 5 cent coke . i played little league baseball for the venice rotary and had ben dunn for a coach. he would have to run me off his dock at the fishermans warf the days we were to play because of the heat. what a great place to grow up and be able to remember it like yesterday. thank goodness i can still come to visit once in a while to our home in capri isle, a place we use to hunt with b-b guns and bow and arrow and fish in the cannal that use to be the by-pass. we would go to the depot in the evening and ride the train to the loop where it would rest for the evening. that was when the circus was in sarasota. woody would write about the fish skeeter and i would catch in the gondalier and it was like being in the bass magazine. only by the grace of God was i born in america and grew up in venice fl. thanks for the memories this website has given me for the past couple of hours. i will return to both from time to time. bill schramm duluth ga. 30096

We are germans and we like the USA. Two times a year since 11 years we visit the states and make roundtrips and we married in Las Vegas `91. We see in this time a lot of people and a lot of countries but the best place is Venice. On our homepage we hava a link to Venice, if you want visit our page (www.sarbach-online.de)/button US 2. We live in Stade a nice town size like Venice and she is very old. We get a very small beach on the river Elbe near Hamburg but not for swimming and no shark teeth`s. In August we visit our friends in NC Durham and after that we come to Venice. See us in January we miss the sunset, hotdog brezzle`s ice and the friendly people.

I was to Venice 2 years ago. My aunt and uncle have a condo. there and they just asked if I would come down to visit. How can anyone pass up an offer to go to Venice? So my friend and I are going the first week in June. For those of you that have never been to Venice- I say you need to see it. It is so relaxing, beautiful and people friendly. Things you need to see/do: Sharky's, search for shark teetk, Capatin Eddie's, Bressler's and see the beautiful sunsets. Peaceful is the best word for Venice.

Hmm. Well, I'm not particularly in love with venice, although it'd be nice for an elderly person who loved the beach. I hate the heat, myself. How about those indians? Mwahaha. I have recently left Venice after 11 years, to move back to NJ where I originally came from. It has been about 8 months now and I am soooo Homesick!! I miss every little thing about Venice, and I would even deal with the winter traffic without complaint if I could come back. But, family needed me, and here I am. Thank God for this Web site , I can visit whenever I want. I get a tear in my eye when I look at the pictures. Venice is a beautiful, pleasant place to live. I didnt appreciate the kindness there until I came back here. I live in an area occupied by re-located New Yorkers and it is not the same!!!! Anyway, I just wanted to say Thanks for the web site and I MISS YOU VENICE!!!!!!

WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE. If I can convince my husband to move, Venice Florida will be the place to settle. We rented for two years at 4 months at a time and beleive me they were the best 4 months of the year. We are golfers and they have some of the best golf courses around. Lots of good eating places at a price we can afford. The people are friendly and ready to invite you into the fold. I really hated to leave the Mobile Home Park but my husband is one stuborn person. I will bug him until he says yes to Venice Florida as a permanent home. You can bet on that

More Trivia about my experiences in Venice throughout the years. In 1956 my wife Jeannine and I were spending our honeymoon at 913 Groveland Ave. Venice Fla. It was my parents winter home at the time. There were no street lights and most of the neighbors had gone back north or were on vacation. It was a very quiet, still, hot night. There was no air conditioning in the house. For that matter no one on the street had AC as far as I know. I was 18 years old with a young 19 year old wife and all of the windows were open with the hope of cooling the place down. My how things have changed in Venice since those days. We were sitting at the kitchen table. There was that tropical feeling with the crickets, tree frogs and night birds singing. The kitchen door to the outside was open with the screen door shut. Suddenly something hit the screen with a loud THUMP. We were scared out of our skin. I acted as if I was not at all afraid. My new wife looked like she would faint. I grabbed a small hunting knife that I had with me and said to her. Be quiet. After I was pretty sure it was safe I fearfully opened the screen door and stepped outside staying close to the house and looked around. There was of course no one there. Since many years have passed I now know what it was that hit the screen. In Florida there a large black beetle that flys very fast at night. Many time since then these beetles have hit our windows with a thud that sounds like a rock being thrown at the window. Well, the rest of the night was a disaster and we ended up leaving the lonely little town of Venice that night and going up to the big city of Sarasota and renting a motel room were there we some people around. Venice in those days was like a ghost town. Well it isn't that way anymore and more and more people are discovering the best kept secret on the West Coast of Florida. Keep your eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary.

I have seen some very interesting things caught at the North Jettys down through the years. I saw a guy catch a Jew fish one day that looked like a monster from the deep. It was nearly all mouth and head. One evening I was fishing shortly after sun down and I thought my hook was caught on a rock. It is very easy to get tangled up or hooked on the bottom when you are fishing from the Jettys. So I took a rag and wound the line around my hand which was covered with the protection of the rag. I gave that 40 pound test line a tremendous jerk. Suddenly the line came lose and a great big bloab of something passed by me and landed on the rocks. It quickly spread out and went back toward the water. It was a pretty big, black ocptepus. It took no time at all getting back into the water and I could hardly believe what I saw. Another time fishing on the North Jettys I caught a beatiful sleek shark. It was only about 10 lbs. I had hardly gotten it up near me and was about to take it off the hook and this guy comes up quickly and smacks my little shark with a big club. I was not a happy camper. But the guy walked off quickly and gave to me the appearance that he thought he had done his civic duty. I always watched carefully from that time on to protect my catch. Keep your eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary.

Now what I am about to say my only be a benign rumor. But I am truly inclined to believe it. " They say", If you have had kidney stones and had them broken up medically. There is a good way to pass them less painfully. Remedy - Go to The Nokomis beach on a warm sunny day in, June, July or August. Get into the Gulf with your swim suit on. Carefully go out to the sand bar off the shore about 75 yards. Bend your knees a little and say, " Oh thank the Lord for this wonderful place ". Now I havn't actually done this but I do believe it will surely help to make those kidney stones pass more quickly and sooth the pain. It won't hurt to try. It is also rumored that it will help, depression, gout, rumitism, arthritis, aching back, and many other aliments to numberous to mention here. Keep your eyes on the Son, Gary

Was just watching the weather channel about the ferocious storm pounding the east coast, which includes Virgina where my folks are at. I know what they are thinking....."we can't wait to retire very soon and move to Venice Florida", and I must say they deserve it. I'm very excited for them but a little depressed for myself because I have at least 25 more years till I can retire and move to Venice. Hats off to them for fighting the good fight for all these years and I'm glad they will enjoy the beautiful scenery of Venice, one of Florida's best kept secrets. I'm sure that Dad will quickly become an avid snook fisherman, etc. I certainly can't wait till this summer to return for vacation and soak up the florida sun, listen to the gators grunt at Myaka State Park, strain my wrist catching snook on the inland, fill coffee cans with sharks teeth, drink lots of ice tea, and head down to Sarasota to Yoders for a fat piece of Coconut Cream Pie! All that will just be for starters. The sights, sounds, smells, taste, feel of Venice is the greatest! ......still countin the days.....well enough for now, keep fighting the good fight!

In the 1950s as a teen age boy living in Venice shark's teeth were not on my agenda of fun things to collect. In fact I have thrown hundreds of what I would consider great ones back when I was getting fish bait. However as I grew older I discovered them. I have collected and coded thousands in the last 40 years. In the 1960s and 1970s I would walk through some of the fields just to the East of Route 41 near South Venice and about every ten feet pick up a nice one. Now since businesses and office buildings have been built up there it is more difficult to find them. However after a big off shore storm and good waves Caspersin beach will still supply a number of them. One morning a friend of mine was walking out caspersin beach and he picked up what he thought was a big old rock and threw it up toward the road. A fellow walking behind him saw him throw the rock and went over and picked it up. My friend said that the guy that picked it up began to yell and jump up and down saying , " I found a giant Mastadon's tooth." It just goes to show you, you better know what you are looking for because you can pass up some good stuff you thought was junk. Somthing else that we discovered about 35 years ago. Under most of the bridges in the area of Venice and Nokomis are live Shells that shell collectors on the beach would nearly die to find. They are covered with dirt and moss. You have to look very carefully and pull them out alive and then boil them for about an hour to kill the animal inside them. They make great bait for some kinds of fish and the shells are beautiful and in tact. After cleaning them throughly and getting the animal out you can put them in a diluted solution of Clorox and the colors really stand out on the shell. When it dries spray it with clear shell paint and they are beautiful. Well enough for now have a great time in Venice and Nokomis. Hope to see you soon. Keep your eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary.

As I read the various comments of people here on the guestbook I saw an entry from M.Koch dated Jan. 2,2001. In it he mentioned the Venice Jettys and fishing from them. Having fished from them fairly regularly for 48 years I can tell you of some real fishing stories. One evening around 9:00PM I was fishing from the North Jetty. I was there in the parking lot on the edge of the bank in my spot across from the first channel marker. I hooked what I thought was a rock and couldnt seem to get my hook broken loose. So I jerked it real hard and it seemed to give and line came back to me. Then as I let it loose the line went out again. After doing this several times I notice something over there on the channel marker moving every time I would pull my line in and let it loose. It was nearly dark so you had to strain your eyes to see something from any distance. Looking more carefully at the channel marker and pulling my line in and letting loose I was able to see what was happening to my line and hook. Each time I pulled real hard on my line a sting ray about 4 pounds in size would seem to be climbing up the channel marker. When I released my line it came back down the channel marker. I finally realized that when I had thrown out my bait it had gone over the top of the marker and into the water on the other side. I had hooked the sting ray and because the line was over the top of the marker I thought I had gotten hooked on a rock when the ray got hooked. Pulling in on the line brought the ray up the pole of the marker and realeasing the let him down. That is the only time I have ever seen a Sting ray climb a channel marker and it happen at the North Jetty in Nokomis Florida. Again thanks to all of you who continue to make Venice and Nokomis the wonderful place to live. Keep your eyes on the Son, Sincerely Gary

The gulf side of the state of florida is the side that we have decided is for us. Venice is the place that to us best represents the best of the gulf side of the State. The people there , mostly transplants from all over the world now, are friendly and easily accept new comers. The Gulf is much warmer water than the Atlantic and you still get the changes. For instance one days the Gulf may be calm and look like it is as smooth as glass. And then by afternoon the waves will roll in with a thunderous beauty that make it look like another body of water. The sun is nearly always shining and you can go to the beach and enjoy it from April till the first of November. Many from the North like it even in December and January. While prices on some things such as groceries and other items may be a little higher than some parts of the U.S. they are about average. Housing is still a real bargin in the Venice area and many people from the North find it to be much more reasonable. The crime rate is low and it is for the most part a very safe place to live. We are thankful to count Venice the place where we want to live. Thanks G.T. Koch Sr.

To all of those out there interested in Triva about Venice.I noticed an entry on the Guest book from M.Koch about the Venice fishing Pier dated Tues. Jan. 2, 2001 EST. In the early 1960s I was fishing beside the Pier before it was opened to the public. No one had been allowed to fish from it because it was not yet completely finished being built. I would walk out into the water until the water came up to my arm pits. The old pole with which I was fishing was given to me by my father when I was 15 years old in 1954. It wouldn't cast far so to get the sand flea that I was using for bait out to deep water I had to get out into water about 4 and a half feet deep. The unfinished Pier was on my left and I would cast under the Pier time and again. When I reeled my bait back the sand flea was always bitten by something but I couln't seem to snag anything. I kept this up for several mornings . One morning as I threw out the bait I thought I had hooked the bottom of the Gulf. But suddenly my drag on my reel started to whiz. I had a big one. The old pole bent and my reel about came off the pole. The fish tried to go for the pilings under the Pier then swam out. Back and forth he went. My heart seemed to be in my throat. I continued to back out of the water slowly carefully reeling in the best I could. When I finally landed the fish it was a 13 pound Red fish. I hardly got him in and a deputy Sheriff was by my side and he ran back to his car and radioed it in that the first big fish was caught off the Venice fishing Pier. I wasn't on the Pier but that didn't matter the news got out quickly and as soon as the Pier was opened in a week or two I had the honor of being the man who caught the first fish from the Pier. My Brother in law William Eisele was there that day and witnessed my catch. He was one happy camper, you would have thought that he had caught the fish himself. If you fish from the Pier remember this sand fleas are good bait. But you have to put a fresh one on about every 60 seconds. The fish will eat the part they want and send it back in nearly the condition that you put it out. But be patient keep putting them out there you can get a big one. Thanks for reading the Trivia. Keep your eyes on the Son. Gary.

This entry arrives via net from North Ohio. I was curious about the temperature in Venice today. Last night here it dipped to about 5 degrees and we have about about a 6-8 inch blanket of snow. I see it's about 55 degrees in Venice. Am waiting for more vacation time, so I can get back to Venice and head over to the Jetty's with some big freshly netted pinfish and catch some snook and reds. Keep fightin the good fight!

I would like to submit a little bit of sentiment about the Venice Pier. I remember as a young boy on family vacation my brother, Dad & I going to the Venice Pier to fish. It seemed so massive and to walk out and look down at the water all I could think was that if I fell in, that ocean would swallow me up. I can remember playing underneath the pier on the beach and hearing the waves crash on the pylons. That pier is quite a structure. Once we were out there fishing late into the night and a young man was fishing for shark. He got a good hit and began to reel in, what he thought was possibly a small shark. He was using squirrel fish as bait. I was just a barefoot boy from Ohio who had caught a lot of bluegill so this seemed pretty thrilling to me. I quickly went over to watch him land the fish, and here he had caught a good size stingray. He was so frustrated because that was his last squirrel fish, that he said a few nasty things about the ray and grabbed his sheath knife, cut open the ray, removed his squirrel fish, cast the bait back into the water and soon caught a pretty large shark. I'm not sure if that's kosher fishing, but for sure it was exciting to me. Well many years have passed, and the pier has become commercialized for sure, (Sharky's) but I still love to take my family and walk out their in the evening while the sun is setting and just enjoy the beautiful view. Again, the Venice Pier with it's majestic stretching view of the Gulf holds a place in my heart! Thanks to all those who upkeep, maintain and support this structure as it is one of the highlights of Venice!

We are just two days past Christmas day here in Virginia. I still remember vividly my first Christmas on the West Coast near Venice. Our home was in Lebanon Ohio and we nearly always had what we called a white Christmas. That year , 1948, my parents had deciede to speand Christmas with my aunt and uncle Bob and Dorthy Noetstine who had bought a mobile home in the Sarasota trailer park in Sarasota Florida. The park was the second largest mobile home park in the U.S. My cousin Sandy and I went outside and walked through some of the streets of the park and believe it or not we had a white Christmas in Florida. The white sand reflected the beautiful Christmas lights that the residents had hung on small palm trees and that were shining from their mobile home parks. It was a real culture shock to be walking around in my short sleeve shirt and short pants in the winter time.I have been in Venice many times since then and been in short sleeve shrits on the beach. You see you can still have a white Christmas in Venice too. Give my regards to Gary and Jill , Mark and Lisa, Becky and Lynn and all of their families. Christmas was white at their Ohio houses but wish we could have all been in Venice for another kind of White Christmas.Remember to keep your eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary

I was relaxing on one of the Venice area beaches and struck up a conversation with an adjacent couple. They had traveled around the world and visited many beautiful beaches. They had concluded that Venice, Nokomis and Sarasota had beaches as pretty as any they had seen. I must say I readily agree. I haven't had the benefit of being a world traveller but I once traveled to Trinidad in the West Indies and snorkeled in the famous Moracas Bay area. Certainly it was beautiful, and I have visited various Atlantic Ocean areas, but the Gulf and the Venice area have captured my fancy like milk on a cat's whiskers. Over the 40 years I have vacationed in Venice I have witnessed many changes. Most of those are positive, although it has gotten a tad bit congested at times. The beautiful pristine Casperson area is a gold mine for sharks teeth, although I have found most of my sharks teeth inland about a mile from the beach in dredge sites. I can't wait to get back down there and enjoy that Florida sun. A gracious thank you to all you Floridians for accepting us Buckeyes and making us feel welcome in your beautiful state! Keep fightin the good fight!

I have so many wonderful memories of Venice, that it is hard to know where to begin. Should i start with the black tip sharks I caught one year? Or the 20 pound snook? Perhaps the nights Dad and I would catch huge redfish. When my wife and I married we continued the tradition of vacationing in Venice and I wasn't sure how she would like it. 17 years later we go down every year, and need I say more, she loves it. Would like to put in a good word for the Venice Church of the Nazarene as we have seen it grow and build new facilities over the years. The people are truly kind and its a wonderful church to visit. Thankful for lots of good friends in Venice and many wonderful memories. One last story; My Senior high year of high school, my buddy Alan and I took off in his 4wd pickup to Venice florida from Cincinnati,Ohio. On the way we visited Ruby Falls and some other attractions. We got into major wrestling matches in the motel room and accidentally bent one bed frame. When we finally got to Venice, it was about 1AM and we went straight to Casperson Beach. This was when the road out there wasn't blocked off and we went right down to the water in his truck and drove down the beach. Everything was great until we started bogging down and sand was under the frame keeping the wheels from getting traction. The tide was coming in pretty fast. Alan & I quickly ran up to the bank and grabbed some palm branches and started digging. After about 2 hours we got the truck free. Wow, were we glad! We went to the house and were so tired, we sacked out. We had a great vacation. Well can't wait to get back. Keep fightin the good fight!

I have enjoyed many wonderful vacations in Venice. When I was a child, my aunt owned a Dairy Dream and she would contribute lots of snacks and goodies for the trip. My Father is a Pastor and we would sometimes leave on Sunday evening after the service. The car would be packed with luggage, fishing gear and snacks and of course us kids and Mom and Dad. Venice is such a great place. Often Dad and I would stay at the Jetty's until 2-3 AM and all of a sudden the big redfish schools would come through, and it was common to catch a stringer of 10-20 pounders. I remember once I was standing on the Jetty's and as far as I could see both directions the water came alive. First small minnows and then bigger fish in a chain reaction all the way to 15-25 pd fish began wildly thrashing and jumping on the top of the water. It was extremely loud and furious and lasted for about 20 seconds. I have never seen such a thing since. Have found many nice sharks teeth, shells, snorkeled, and really enjoy Yoders coconut cream pie there in Sarasota. The sunsets, beauty of the beaches, slow pace and lots of sunshine make Venice one of the worlds best kept secrets. It is also a excellent area for catching snook, as I caught a beauty 2 years ago. I was about to go out to fish for the evening and my lovely wife asked if I would be gone very long. I said it depends if the fish are biting, she said she would'nt wait up if I was gone too long. When i came back about 1 AM I told her my wrist was sore from catching so many fish. One of those was a 37 inch snook, absolutely beautiful fish. Well I better sign off, because I'm getting homesick for Venice. Keep fightin the good fight!

Venice is the place to be for fun, fellowship, relaxation and recreation. Also the State of Florida is the State that has now elected our new President of the United States of America. It is interesting that many people chide those who live in Florida about being retired or going there to die. Yet it took Florida to elect the President. Also I noticed that Sarasota County had a majority vote on the prevailing side. Thank you for helping to elect President Elect George W. Bush. Florida is a melting pot for people of all different states and nations. Many people from Europe have been coming to Venice in the last 20 years. And having met many of the them they are a welcomed addition to the City. The business and Civic leaders of Venice do a wonderful job of keeping the city the best place on the West Coast to live. A great big thanks needs to be handed out the Pastors, Priests and Church leaders in the area for keeping excellent values before the people in Venice also. For It is a good clean wholesome place in which to live with a very low crime rate. Keep your eyes on the Son.

My wife's family has visited Venice for over thirty years. Her grandparents have lived in Venice since the 1960's. Recently, my in-laws moved to Venice and reside in a home on Tennyson Way, off Jacaranda Blvd. We know that they do not miss the snow, and cold that upstate New York has to offer this time of year. They are enjoying the warm, sunny days. We look forward to our next visit when the kids get out of school in June.

Hello, my heart!!! Truly Venice is where my heart is. I'm here in Kentucky longing for the warmth that not only comes from the beautiful Florida sun but from the precious people we have met in the Venice and Nokomis area. We try to visit a least twice a year and hope to be there in February 2001. Others don't understand my obsession but they've not been to Venice, Florida. I am 29 years old and counting the days til retirement....until then I'll just dream. I hope the residents of Venice realize how lucky they are. Can't see you soon enough, Venice.

Times change, places progress or regress. But people seem to remain for the most part the same. The city of Venice and the area surrounding it has progressed nicely and there are so many more advantages for things to do than there were years ago. When I was in high School there in the early 1950s the high School was located in Nokomis and all of the Venice students were bussed to Nokomis. Yes, we had bussing in the early 1950s. However our football team had no helmets or pads and we didn't do much travelling to other schools. But we sure did pick out a lot of sand burrs from our skin any time we played. One thing we could boast about was our Marching band. We had real uniforms and we travelled to Fort Myers and marched in what we thought was the biggest parade in the world. We also went to Sarasota and marched in the State competion under the lights of the old Sarasota high School football field where the Sailors Circus performed each year.Mr. Slezseman was our band director and he took his job seriously. I remember one trip to Fort Myers when some of the larger boys in the band began to sing, " Selezeman has a head of lead, count off one , two," ect. Well the band director didn't think that was to funny. He was sitting up front with the bus driver and suddenly he was on top of us and in the Asile loudly asking who had said he had a head of lead? He had redish brown hair and his face was red as the seating sun over the Gulf in the evening. Of course we all denied having any part in saying that he had a head of lead. The rest of the trip down was very calm. On the way back, well that is for another time.Enough for now. Keep your eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary

Venice is the place to be if you want to fish, hunt fossils, swim or see alligators on the Myaka. Before my family discoverd Venice in the 1950s we vacationed in Sarasota. At that time Sarasota was the Winter Quarters for the Ringling Brother's Circus. One day while visiting the Circus winter Quarters I slipped over to a large Circus Wagon with thick glass and heavy bars on it. I was a small boy and as I stood on my tip toes to look into the hugh circus wagon a giant gorilla took the back of his hand and hit those bars with a resounding bang that shook the entire Wagon. Needless to say it ruined my day. In later years speaking with people that traveled withs the circus I have been told that he was the one of the largest gorillas in captivity at the time and that a rope had been placed into his pen and 20 strong men were unable to beat him in a tug of war. In later years that Winter Quarters for Ringling came to Venice. When we moved to Venice in the early 1950s we found a good place on the Myaka River to rent a boat. It was called Snook Haven. The owner had a large porch on his house where you went in to pay the rental on your boat. On the floor of the porch was a real alligator stuffed. It was 15 feet long. My dad said to the owner who had lived on the Myaka all his life. I bet that's the biggest Gator you ever saw on this river. The man said, " My dad, who owned this place before me, and I stood here when I was a child and saw something coming down the river that looked like a large mound of dirt. As It came closer we could tell it was a hugh cow or bull floating along. As it past us we saw that it was in the jaws of a big alligator. We estimated that Alligator to be at least 18 foot long." Needless to say anytime dad and I fished the Myaka we always kept a keen eye out to make sure we were not attacked. In those days you could buy baby alligators all up and down the roads of Florida. When they out lawed the selling and killing of alligators some sold Caymens from South America. Many of those rascals got flushed down the toilets, lost in the back yards and some how found their way into the steams and rivers of Florida. They have a nasty attitude and the old Flordia Alligator gets blamed for a lot of the mischeif. Well enough for now. Keep your eyes on the Son.

In the early 1950s as I was coming off the North Jettys after fishing all night I noticed a big cat down in the rocks. As I sauntered by a closer look revealed that it was a large Bob Cat. Another time my friend and I were standing on the South Jettys when a large Alligator or a Salt water Crock went swiming out between the Jettys in the channel into the Gulf. Also in 1954 Phillip Hider and I were talking with the couple that lived on the Air base. At that time there were very few houses out there on route 41 near the base and it was like a wilderness all around it. The couple said that they were out in the back yard one night a in the shadows they was a large panther prowling around. Well those were the days that when you talk of them now people have a hard time relating to. Things may have changed a lot. But for the most part they are for the better. The intercoastal waterway has been cut through and made Venice an Island, the By pass has improved the traffic flow and there is more than one Grocery. Progress has been good to Venice. Well enough for now. Keep your eyes on the Son. Sincerely Gary.

Venice is also a healthy place in which to live. When my parents first took me to Venice in the late 1940s we met many people who were physically challenged at the Beaches in the area. Some of them were people with upper respitory problems and many with arthritic dissabilities. They all told us that their medical doctors has told them to come to Venice for their health. In those days there wern't as many antibiotics and arthitis drugs. We learned that many medical doctors said that the area from Venice down to Fort Myers on the West Coast of Florida was what they called the health belt. And they often recommended that their patients go to the West Coast to the health belt for help and relief. They said that getting into the water and excersise and the air from the Gulf alleivated many of their aliments. So you see it is no wonder that many people come back. Many don't know that they are helping themselves physically just being in Venice. Well enough chatter from me for now. Hope to see all you Venicians soon. Keep your eyes on the Son. Gary.

Ten years ago someone approached us to buy a condo on Venice Beach. We looked at a video and said, why not?? We now love Venice and go down as often as we can. What is not to love about Venice, Fl. It is about as perfect a spot as you can imagine. We love the Crow's Nest, Sharky's and Lunas. See ya in Venice.

Thank you for providing the web page of Venice. The first time that my family came to Venice was in 1947. It was nearly like a Ghost town in those days after world War II. I went to High School there in the 1950s and found everything to be so wonderful that I hoped never to leave. However my father had a business in Ohio and we returned there. My parents kept their home in Venice though not living there. As the years have past they have bought, sold and built homes there. We presently have a home on Sunset Beach Dr. in South Venice and vacation there in the summer. My parents have now passed away and I have children who have children and they all vacation in Venice. It has been my joy to have seen Venice grow from a small little village to a wonderful city with a bright future. I hope to retire there in a few years. Thank you to all of you who live there the year around that make Venice one of the best cities on the West Coast of Florida. Keep your eyes on the Son. Gary.

I always enjoy seeing the Venice site on the internet . It has been my joy to see the city expand and grow throughout a period of 50 years . Having lived there in the 1950s and returning nearly every year for 50 years one sees a lot of changes. One of them that needs some help is the old Rail Road depot . I can remember some happy times sending boxes of fruit back north from the depot . My dad always had a big smile on his face when he saw the train leave with some of his prize gifts of fresh fruit . He knew that his northren friends and family would eat their hearts out that Bill, was way down there in the warm weather picking fresh fruit while they were up there scooping snow out of their boots . Well the depot needs preserving . I used to walk by it many an evening in the 50s. That of course was before the intercoastal was cut through . Now to many it is only an eye sore . But it has great historical possiblities . All in all the city has really developed well. Thanks to the late Don Morgan and Bill Gunter and others that rescued the old Kentucky Military buildings and made them a real asset to what was a liability some years ago . Also the beaches in the area have the board walks and the restoration projects that have brought change, and it is good change . For old folk like I am becoming can get up there under the shelters and sit through a rain storm . You can walk a long distance on the board walk without some tourist side swiping you in his car and you don't step on the precious sea oats that helps to hold the beach from washing away. Keep up the good work all you natives of Venice . We all up here in the East thank you for keeping good values and helping to keep Venice a place that many of us hope to come to some day . Give my regards to Gary Ball, great pastor, and to all people who make Venice a better place in which to live. Keep your eyes on the Son . Sincerely Gary T. Koch Sr.

I came to the West Coast with my mother and dad in 1947 . We stayed in the old Sarasota mobile home park near what was then Payne Park the winter quarters for the professional ball teams throughout the years. At that time Venice was a little village with about 600 people . We bought our first home in Venice in 1953 . It was located at 913 Groveland Ave. We lived across the street from the Konas who still live there . I attended high school at what was called the Venice Nokomis high school . It was located in Nokomis because Venice had no high school . Some of the exciting things in those days for a teen ager such as I was then was going to our high school games played in the KMI gym, riding my hydro plane (seven and half feet long,10 horse power motor) in Donna bay ,trying to chase the KMI's out of town so they wouldn't take our girl friends, going to Sarasota and playing fast picth softball on the Nazarene team against such great fast picth players as Bucky Enas and a pitcher named King. Venice was not discovered by the gourists in those days and the only Real Estate office that was in town was Old Mr. Sanderson and you had to go look him up to get him to find you a house. Most of the streets that had been thoughtfully laid out by the Locomotive Engineers in the 1920s were there but there were few homes on the steets . The place kinda looked like a ghost town. My parents and I moved back to Ohio in the 50s but continued to keep homes there all these years . I have always gone back to Venice for my vacations and hope to live there in the future. Many times when life is very stressful for me one of the ways that I get away in my mind from the stress is to think of the wonderful times spent at the Venice Jettys , the Nokomis beach , bycycling around town or picking up Shark's teeth at Casperson beach. Give my regards to some of my old friends, Billy Wimbish, Carlton Hurt , Dick Carney and the Konas.

Venice is heaven on earth. For a remote beach go to Casperson and drive to the end. Youll pass several areas to park, keep driving and youll find a piece of beach just for you. Youll have to walk to the end of the road and down the beach a bit. Although casperson is not a clothing optional beach, you may run into natural sunbathers and thongs. If that is offensive to you stay away. Just a warning if you bring the kids.

We are familiar with Sharkey's on the pier and Mad Sams. Any other suggestions for our week stay. We have two kids and are flying my wife's niece for babysitting.

I grew up going to Venice every summer to visit my great-grandfather who lived on the Rialto. I especially remember sand in my bathing suit and shark tooth hunting! It was the best time of my life. They always had a terrible time getting me back on the plane to come home to McKees Rocks. I have just recently decided that it's time to go back to Venice like I've always wanted to, but this time permanently. Am job and house hunting (via long distance!) and hope to return to Venice soon. From the pictures, it's still as beautiful as ever. Can't wait until my kids see it!!! By the way, if Jo Haselby is out there, send me a line!!

Recently came for an interview and loved your community. Am seriously interested in relocation there. The people were friendly and the town clean, peaceful and beautiful.

Just browsing the net inquiring about Venice as future permanent home in about 2.5 years. Plan to check it out for real next winter. Comments are encouraging from this section.
